After a relaxing Christmas and New Year Break at the end of a very successful 2011 for CGL, the icing on the cake was returning to work at our shiny, new offices in Godalming. Aldershot served well for CGL’s Head Office over the past 17 years but the time had come to move to a better strategically located office and we found that in Godalming.
With a direct rail connection to London Waterloo nearby, equidistant (50km) from Heathrow and Gatwick airports, and close links to local and national road networks, this move puts CGL firmly on the map in the South East. Located within a prosperous part of the region, our new premises can accommodate future growth and expansion predicted in the coming years and will help us to deliver our vision as a dominant force in the provision of ground solutions with a powerful national and regional presence.
Although a relatively small town Godalming, like CGL, punches well above it weight! Appearing in the Domesday Book of 1085, Godelminge had a population of roughly 400 at that time with assets thatincluded three mills, 25 ploughs and woodland worth 103 hogs! It came to world attention in 1881, when Godalming became the first town in the world to have a public electricity supply, powered by a waterwheel on the River Wey. Notable people from Godalming include Julius Caesar (cricketer, not conqueror!), Aldous Huxley, George Mallory, Alvin Stardust and Cheryl/Ashley Cole.
Although several of the engineers live in the town already, the team is rapidly getting to know and love the area. We have already made several trips to the local restaurants, bars and go-kart track and we are planning a number of events with staff, colleagues and clients in the foreseeable future.
